With Labor Day coming up in the next week, I thought that I would find something to post for you labor day picnic. Here is something that I posted a year ago. These dishes are easy to make and delicious!
As a vegetarian, when you go to picnics, it’s hard to leave it feeling like you had a decent. It’s even harder living in Texas, where BBQ is ubiquitous. The only vegetable dishes are …

Don’t you love the name of the blog? Very piratical! I thought of high seas and swashbucklers! It’s really a food blog. LOL! One that was started with grilling in mind. Being from Texas, cooking over coals or smoking is a big deal.
What really caught my eye was this recipe for hot dog buns. Don’t they look wonderful. Instead of the pasty ones you get in the store, these look toothy. They look like they can hold a hot dog or sausage with all the trimmings and not fall apart! A definite must make for me(I love bread making!)

What a perfect post for this week! The New Year is almost upon us. We want to start it out right. And what better way that to have an especially lucky meal in celebration on the day!
We here on the Gulf Coast take our black-eyed peas and greens quite seriously for New Years Day. So seriously, that many grocery stores sell out of the black-eyed peas. LOL!
Here are some great recipes from Lana!

Wow! My mouth is watering. I am always looking for a new tofu recipe. This is made with jerk sauce. Very Jamaican. So I know that it’s going to be tasty.
Check out the site. They have some great recipes. This is a restaurant in NYC. They need to move to Houston. We could use a restaurant like this!
All the ingredients are easily available. Pimento berries is allspice which you can get at supermarkets. If you are hit by the pumpkin shortage, butternut squash would be a good substitute.
Jim was a never a big barbecue rib type of guy. He didn’t like gnawing bones. He felt that he was always getting the gristle and fat. And it was too greasy for him. It was me that liked the ribs.
After going vegetarian, I kind of missed them. Boca has a product called riblets. They were a pretty good proximation of ribs. They reminded of the riblet sandwich you would get at McDonalds. However, they were pretty expensive. And I missed the caramelization of the barbecue sauce. Read the rest of this entry »
And they are almost like the one’s my mom made. The only difference is that these are vegetarian. And I be that if you bite into them, you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference. If you have kids, definitely give this a try!
If you are stumped as what to have for your Labor Day Barbecue, try this pulled Seitan. All it takes is a package of Seitan, that you can get at your neighborhood Supermarket. It’s generally can be found in the produce section. While you are there, be sure to pick up your favorite barbecue sauce! This recipe takes minutes and everyone should like this!
With Labor Day coming up, I want to give vegetarians and non-vegetarians as many options as possible. Here are some main course salads to take to your picnic or barbecue. Everyone will like them. Most important, you will definitely have something you will enjoy eating! Read the rest of this entry »
I am in the process of planning out what I am going to do this Labor Day weekend!
Barbecue in the summer is a tradition everywhere, especially, in Texas. Hot dogs and burgers. Sausages, and the ever present beef brisket are the staples of our barbecues. With Labor Day, you are going to see people firing up their barbies to get ready for family and friends. Most times, as a vegetarian, there’s not going to be much for you there. Unless you have really cool friends(like me), or you are with a lot of other vegetarians. Read the rest of this entry »
With Labor Day coming, you know that the end of summer is here. School is starting or in some states has already started. In my family, Labor Day was a time to go to the parade(I am from a big union town) and afterwards we had a picnic in the park. We always barbecued.
Being a vegetarian makes it a bit more difficult to be part of the barbecue. Especially in Texas. Barbecues a ubiquitous here. It’s one of our main types of celebration. Usually it’s a barbecued brisket. Sometimes you might have a hot dog day. Never a tofu pup. Or a nice boca burger. I have learned to bring my own barbecue with me. Otherwise, I would be stuck eating pickles and potato salad. I want a little more than that. Wouldn’t you? I have come up with several things. I will bring boca burgers. Tofurky makes a killer Italian sausage. I have a barbecue riblet recipe. Read the rest of this entry »
